Identifying oneself as a healer

Our weekend of lectures in October 2010 is still being a blessing to our church and community. Everyone loved having a series of lectures that really built a sense of community and spiritual uplift. Starting with Friday’s lecture prep meeting on Supporting Spiritual Healing, proceeding the next morning to a workshop on making good decisions (PrayerQuest), and culminating with The Possibilities of Prayer on Sunday afternoon, there was much growth and healing.

Our church presently doesn’t have a practitioner listed in the Christian Science Journal, but at the lecture prep meeting you encouraged those who were willing, to wear a name tag indicating “Healer” to the lecture. Many members were willing to do this, which provided an excellent opportunity for members and guests to be aware that there are practitioners available for prayerful healing work, even though they are not listed. Since the lecture, several members have increased their healing practice because of this awareness.

Healing of panic attack

Thank you for your lecture at the Sparta, NJ Christian Science church. I used what you suggested (identifying myself / others with moral & spiritual qualities).
Last night we had movie night at the clubhouse of the development where I live. I had a panic attack. So I decided to think about the moral / spiritual qualities in all the folks there (about 10 or so). As I sat there in the clubhouse being bombarded by terrorizing thoughts, I thought, I'm going to use what I just learned earlier today in the lecture. So I began looking at the folks around me. In front of me sat a Grandmother who had just had a birthday party for her 3 year old grandson. Nearby me also sat the man who set up the projector and speakers so we could see the movie we were currently watching. Behind me sat the woman who made the popcorn for all of us. On the other side of me sat the man who was a lawyer who is helping our condo association with a lawsuit.

I felt surrounded by these caring thoughts. Then I thought about the qualities I expressed that day too. The terrifying feeling left me. Thinking about all the good God qualities in all the folks in that room made me feel safe again.

This morning I used the helicopter approach and dug deep into my study of the lesson sermon. Thank you sooooo much for your lecture "The Possibilities of Prayer".

Healing from Aiken SC talk

I am so glad you came to lecture for us. We have seen some fruitage, too.
The Sunday following the lecture we had several people come to church. Some
were there at the lecture, and some were simply searching. We have had one
individual come back several times, and may possibly join the church. Last
night at the Wednesday evening meeting several people gave testimonies about
how the lecture helped them. One lady said that the phrase "pray as you go"
helped her. She and her husband were going to go on a hike in the mountains
to celebrate thier 27th anniversary, and the day of, the lady had a terrible
headache. She remembered the phrase "pray as you go" and thought "I can do that."
They ended up having a beautiful time on the mountain (literally!).

Church growth

Loved the Daily Lift of Nov 17,2010!!! www.christianscience.com/dailylift

Such good, clear, helpful ideas. We have 3 new brother birds (actually 2 sister birds, and 1 brother) hanging with our flock. The couple found Christian Science and our church on the internet some time back. As we had been praying to have a wider sense of church they appeared, having “been thinking of checking us out for some time. They had been reading Science and Health online, but had never been to a Christian Science service. Following the directions on our website, they drove the 20+ miles and have been coming ever since. The other gal is someone from a distance in the other direction, who had called me for help, having been steered my way by a local Reading Room.

Thought you'd enjoy knowing the members of our church have begun gathering seeds to share. We could all relate to the metaphor in your Daily Lift, though we hadn’t put it in those terms.

Healing and comments from Long Beach, CA

I was unable to attend the lecture. Nevertheless, I asked my friend who attended to fax the Bible verses to me. I had been nauseated for several days, but after I started meditating on the verses I received a healing. They are a great comfort to me.

The Bible references were helpful. They gave us something to think about. We know that we can approach God and ask for solutions to our problems. A friend of mine who is not a Christian Scientist expressed his gratitude for the message presented at the talk.

I appreciated Elise’s recounting the biography of Mrs. Eddy’s early life and life altering accident which caused her to search the scriptures for healing. I especially liked the story of Mrs. Eddy healing of the boy with club feet.

A couple attended the lecture. The wife is legally blind. After the lecture, they commented that “We loved it! This was our first time attending a Christian Science lecture. We will return again to hear more.”

Powerful! We can see the Bible in a new light. It was great to hear how one can use the Bible not just for preaching but also to effect healing in people’s lives. Great seminar!

Mrs. Eddy’s statements on prayer were interesting. I like how Elise explained to us the four factors involved in the opening sentence in the chapter on “Prayer” found in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy. If I remember correctly they are faith, all things are possible to God, a spiritual knowledge of God, and having an attitude of unselfed love.

I liked how Elise explained some of the Greek words. I also liked how she defined words and terms like “baptism,” “faith,” and “Holy Spirit.” Just thinking about these definitions makes me appreciate the Bible more. I also got a kick out of the notion that “baptism” originally meant to pickle a vegetable.

Feeling the Christ

I thought everything was perfect. It was so inspiring to see the Christ presence in action right there and then.

The workshop was well received and many new faces! Thank you for all your support and guidance with ever detail into making this the most memorable lectures that we have ever had. This experience gives our membership more to build up and a clearer picture that Christ is active even at our church in Amarillo, Texas.

Effective prayer before the lecture

Elise had asked us to pray about resistance to the truth. It works!

- We had a call from a man who heard our announcement on the Sentinel radio program and followed up, calling our Reading Room.

- Two newspapers have printed the press release she sent. One hadn't printed any lecture information for years. The other used her picture.

- Two visitors in the RR this week overcame their reluctance to come in and face their problems. One of domestic abuse, (for whom I will share Elise's article on safety of women. The other dealing with alcoholism had passed by ten times before he came in for a long talk (was so grateful that he donated $150 to the RR).

- Yesterday a regular visitor from Guatemala reported he had found a new room. Last Friday we had read Elise's article on Finding the Home That's right for you. We worked on finding qualities to replace his cold, dirty, dark basement room. His new room is light, clean, tranquil, and warm, better located, and less rent!

We're continuing to work, pray, and gratefully share the two spiritual events with our communities.

Witnessing Chist's power in action.

Your statements brought the Science of Christianity to very simple levels! In fact, the very next day TWO dear ones called for help in the AM, and I used several of your examples to explain!!!

Your last wrap around of everyone in LOVE was so LOVING! Thanks for the great uplift!

I am sure our dear church will bloom and blossom! Actually, we have had 2 new members the last few months and ohters are coming here and there, too!

Banners help

I am so grateful for this past weekend. It has been such an inspirational time. Much growth is taking place.

I don't know if anyone told you about the attendance, but CJ counted 162 people attending. I believe that is double or more than the number at last year's lecture. She said that a couple of the local ministers that she had invited came. I know that several people that had never come before were there. And I think that at least one person came because of the banners outside.

Thank you for the suggestion to wear the Healer badge. We had some made for ushers with their names and usher on it, and I think I will have several Healer badges made for any of us to wear who are willing.

Blessings!

Lecture in County Jail

There was significant resistance from the chaplain to having a Christian Science speaker due to a misunderstanding of Christian Science. However, after the talk the representative from the chaplain association was enthusiastic and welcoming. Hopefully the local congregation will follow up by participating on a regular basis in prison ministry. Here's their report....

September 25, 2010 Spirituality Workshop at Allegan County Jail

It was a beautiful afternoon, and we were escorted into the Allegan County Jail
by Sergeant Merrill, a professional, yet warm woman who greeted us with ‘have you left your guns and grenades at home’?

As we went through the airlock, she chatted with us and the guards letting us
in. We met the jail Chaplain Davis, who is the Vice President on the Board of Directors of the Forgotten Man Ministries the organization that serves many of Michigan’s county Jails. He is filling in until another chaplain is appointed for this jail.

Elise Moore, our Lecturer, had suggested that we take in a few Bibles and Science and Health books to be donated to the Jail library/book cart.

We went into the Recreation Room – which had a number of seats – about 28, and
three women inmates already there. The Chaplain and the Sergeant each brought in more groups of people. Elise introduced herself to the women, and as more men
and women came, she shook the hand of each and met them.

The women’s seats were separated from the men’s by the Chaplain. It was a full
house of about 23 inmates, plus the Chaplain and Sergeant, plus the two of us
from Saugatuck Society.

We sat on the far right facing Elise, with the group of men, with the pile of
Bibles and Science and Health's and Sentinels on a chair between us.

Kathy introduced Elise, (and did a great job, by the way)…
Elise began her talk on “God is Speaking to You” (“in the recreation room at
2:00”, as Elise puts it…!).

A number of the inmates brought their Bibles, and a number were taking notes.
One was writing his notes IN his Bible. During the entire lecture the audience was attentive and appreciative – they seemed genuinely interested. The audience was very attentive – Elise noted it was one of the most attentive audiences she’s had in a prison. She mentioned one young ‘tough looking’ guy who started out not looking up at all, but during each story, he really focused.

At the end, one was asked how if they could choose what they did with their free
time, and he said ‘we didn’t HAVE to come’.

Many shook Elise’s hand at the end, and thanked her.

After the Lecture the Chaplain asked if he could keep a copy of Science and
Health and gladly took the rest of the Science and Health and Bibles for the
jail’s book cart, a clear change of tone from when we first came in.

Willing to be a healer?

I am full of gratitude for what you have brought to our community. This is the first time that I have witnessed a bit of the process of bringing a Christian Science Lecture forward, and it has been good in every way. I feel as though an apostle has come to strengthen and teach us, and has brought a strong spiritual impulse to our islands community which will grow and bear much fruit. I am also seeing the importance of identifying ourselves as "healers", for the reason that you mentioned at the lecture itself, but also to live up to our possibilities as Christian Scientists. When you presented the idea, it took me out of my comfort zone, partly because there are some health and personal issues that I have been seeking healing of which are still in evidence, and I want to "first remove the beam from my own eye," but I will be helped forward with refreshed expectancy of good. I am sure that we here have all come away from these events with new inspiration on how to share Christian Science with others and prepare ourselves for growth in all ways!

Healing using ideas from lecture

1. Susan's grandson was ill. She listened to God and remembered what you had said, "If it's not true about God, it's not true about him." The boy had an immediate healing.

2. I listened to God when my indoor cat scooted out a door. (This could be very serious, because where I live cougars have often been sighted.) Instead of trying to coax him back in, I went in the house and prayed to know that he couldn't be out of his right place and that he was obedient to the Mind that made him. He returned into the house in about 2 minutes.

3. When a very expensive electronic device was missing, I remembered you talking about shining the light of Truth on the missing object. I found it very shortly, in a place it hadn't been the day before.

Once again, in behalf of the entire membership, we thank you for the MARVELOUS lectures you gave us!

Sowing Seeds of Love

My brother told me, that after he heard your Daily Up Lift, that he decided to write a thank you email to a man that did some good work at the golf course. That man has been so mean to everyone, that no one likes him very much. At the time I was writing to you, my brother heard back from the man's wife. She was so happy that someone at the golf course cared about her husband. That was one proof that the seeds of Love worked.

I attended the Lecture you gave here in Toronto on April 1st at the Church on St. George St. – God is Speaking to You! It was wonderful and I am so grateful for having been there to hear your talk … I was so ‘into’ what you were saying that when you finished I was surprised to see that and hour had gone by…
So thank you!

Typical comments from lecture chair

Your talk was outstanding! Because it was so participatory, everyone was very engaged. I loved that it spoke to everyone, from longtime Christian Scientists to those who had never entered a CS church. Identifying other names for God, a discussion of how to pray, thoughts on sin and baptism, elements in a healing, what happens if a person is not healed are all topics that many Christian Scientists, including myself, often have a difficult time responding to. One of the most difficult concepts for me personally has always been "sin". I play the piano, so your reference to Gen. 1 as the original score, and defining "sin" as making a mistake comparable to playing the "wrong note in music" really helped. The fact that sin doesn't come from anywhere but just needs to be corrected like a wrong note is so meaningful.

You really raised the bar on the Lecture Preparatory meeting. I must admit I have often been guilty of thinking about who has a problem that needs healing when thinking about who to invite. Going forward my invitation will be: you will enjoy this talk because you are spiritually-minded, you enjoy intellectual discussions and you might enjoy knowing why I have been a Christian Scientist all my life.
So, many thanks again for your excellent preparatory meeting, your beautifully presented talk and very clear and engaging message.
My best, Carol

Healing Results from Valley Park MO lectures

Fruitage from Two Lectures by Elise Moore
First Church of Christ, Scientist
Valley Park, MO
March, 2010

On Saturday, March 13, Elise gave her lecture on “The Possibilities of Prayer” at a nearby branch of our county library. On Sunday, March 14, she gave the one called “Texting God: Effective Short Prayers” at our church. She also held a workshop on supporting spiritual healing for our members on Friday, March 12. The ideas shared on these occasions continue to bless and heal. This is just a summary of what’s been reported so far.

Two healings related to the lectures occurred even before they even took place. About two weeks before the lectures, a member inadvertently picked up a metal pan she’d just removed from the oven. At first the pain evoked a startled “Oh!” But almost immediately after, she found herself voicing a very firm “NO.” No because she was spiritual through and through and could never be touched by anything that could harm her true substance. For a few moments, she held to this and other thoughts of her true being, loving the thoughts she was entertaining as the consciousness that heals. Then she continued preparing dinner. She didn’t think about the “burn” again until later when, preparing for bed, she couldn’t tell which hand had been involved. She realized that “NO” must be one of those effective short prayers we’d be hearing about. And so it was.

The member who was to introduce Elise at the Sunday lecture wrote: “About a day or so after I agreed to do one of the introductions, I noticed that my throat was beginning to constrict so that increasingly I was barely able to speak above a whisper. I recognized right away that this wasn’t a more general claim of cold or contagion, but a specific argument against my ability to do my part in this lecture. Recognizing the error for what this was, there wasn’t any sense of panic or thought of withdrawing from the task at hand, but patient knowing that all would be well and that nothing could interfere with the blessings to be realized. By Friday, the symptoms had begun to clear. By Sunday there wasn’t a vestige of the claim or any fear of being able to speak normally.”

After the Friday workshop, during which we were listing God-qualities and identifying ourselves and others with them, a member returned home to find her family room floor covered with her husband’s belongings. She realized that she didn’t have to approach this in a judgmental or frustrated way—that she could identify her husband with those God-qualities whatever the outward appearance might be. This has since proved helpful both in discussing issues with her husband and, more importantly, in maintaining her inner peace.

The lectures themselves were seen as a great blessing both by those who already identify themselves as Christian Scientists and by others. Both venues were filled with eager listeners. A member who brought her next door neighbor said that her neighbor is now looking forward to visiting our Reading Room. Another member invited a Mormon friend who commented, “I really enjoyed Elise’s talk on the power of prayer. All of the events for your faith that I have attended have had top notch public speakers—very gifted!” A third member had invited a Jewish friend who loved the Saturday talk and said it had given her a lot to think about and put into practice. This member also attended the Sunday lecture with a Catholic friend who asked her and another member some deep, searching questions on how to view disasters and pray effectively for their victims, and she expressed interest in delving into the copy of Science and Health that she gotten at a lecture some years ago. A woman who was raised Catholic but has been attending a Christian Science church for about a year came all the way from Illinois to hear the Saturday lecture and loved it. A Christian Scientist who brought a friend wrote, “Both my friend and I took away some wonderful reminders of how simple effective prayer really is. And she was happy to see that many of her prayers already fell into the three helpful categories you described.” One of our Sunday school teachers reported that the children really liked hearing about the “machete” and “helicopter” methods of prayer.

Two people filled out visitor cards, requesting further information. One of them was at the library and noticed our sign. She decided to attend the lecture and liked it so well that she came to the one at our church the following day as well. After that lecture she was thrilled to receive her first copy of Science and Health. She has been unemployed, and both lectures included prayer-based resolutions of that problem.

The other enjoyed the Saturday lecture so much that he attended our church with his wife the next day especially to make a donation to our lecture fund. When a lecture committee member emailed him, giving her phone number in case he wanted to ask questions, he called her and asked deep and intelligent questions for over an hour. He had clearly been studying Science and Health with the purpose of being better able to pray for himself and others.

People who weren’t even at the lectures are also being blessed through conversations with those who were. As one of our members commented, “I’ve already shared ideas with two people and will continue to do so. It is such a natural step when you are full of inspiration.” Another member passed along the idea of identifying with God-qualities to her daughter, who’s a member of an evangelical Christian church, and she loved it.

A woman who was at the “Texting God” lecture has a friend who’d been experiencing chronic back pain. Though she was uncertain whether he even believed in God, she spoke to him about the importance of recognizing that God was good and that good was going on in his life. He replied that there was so much bad going on, and she urged him to respond to it with forgiveness. He later told her he’d written an email to someone who was causing him a lot of problems, forgiving the individual and acknowledging their good qualities. By that evening, he realized the back pain was gone. He asked his friend if there was a connection between forgiving and recognizing the good qualities and the improvement in his back. She assured him that there was—that this was evidence that God’s law of good was operating in his life.

One member had shared invitations with several of her friends from the Christian neighborhood group she’s in. Though they couldn’t attend, they were very interested in the message about prayer. She’ll be sharing her notes with nine of them at their April meeting. She sums up so beautifully the long term effect of these lectures when she states, “This is like throwing a pebble into a lake and then watching the concentric circles continue to move out to multiple shores. Let’s start a “Love chain reaction” and watch it grow and bless our community.”

As we do so, there will be still more fruitage to report.

Healings happen in Puerto Rico talk

There has been much healing before, during, and after the lectures, and we are rejoicing and so grateful to see these blessings of the Science of the Christ for ourselves and our neighbors. Thank you so much, Elise, for your lectures and prayers.

A woman who was given a flyer for the lecture as she was reading the announcement for the lecture on an A-frame sign in front of the Church came to the lecture and the next Wednesday evening came to the testimony meeting to express her gratitude for the lecture and for the Science and Health which she was reading. She said that from the minute she was given the invitation she felt as if she had been plugged into a spiritual power source.

Another woman came to the Reading Room for the first time a week or two before the lecture. She was healed of chronic pain in her knee on that first visit. She began reading Science and Health, came to the lecture, and later testified at a Wednesday testimony meeting, not only about the healing of her knee (which she illustrated by walking to the front of the Church), but also about finding a place to live and a job by applying the ideas from the lecture.

A church member found out the day of the lecture that one of her sons had been in a car accident, but had not been harmed. She prayed to know that she could go to the lecture without fear for him of any later effects from the accident, and was able to be at the lecture free of concern. She later found out that her other son had someone on a bicycle run into his car, but neither the person on the bicycle or her son was injured. She was so grateful for these evidences of God’s omnipresent care.

Another church member, who had gone to take someone home in the time between the English lecture and the Spanish lecture, backed into a parked car as she was leaving the person’s house. The car belonged to the niece of the person she had taken home, and the niece was in the house. It turned out that there had been a previous dent in the car in the same place, and since the insurance company had already arranged for the repair, there was no need for the church member to do anything. She was able to return to church for the Spanish lecture with much gratitude for God’s care.

REPORT ON HEALINGS
Page 2

A member reported that a friend who has a problem that causes her great difficulty in walking, who had come to lectures and some church services in the past, came to this lecture and said she felt the presence of Love more than she had before. She is now earnestly studying Science and Health, and says she now really feels that healing is possible for her.

This same member said her accountant, who had been resistant to reading Science and Health in the past, was now reading it. She had been concerned about losing her job and had also been caring for a bedridden family member who was paralyzed. She is now reading the book and so is her family member. The accountant’s job contract has been extended for nine months, and both she and her family member feel uplifted by what they are reading.

Also, another person this member knows called her for prayer because she had been diagnosed with a terminal illness. This person had also been resistant to Christian Science for many years. Both this woman and her husband have been healed by reading Science and Health.

The daughters of another member have been more receptive to using Christian Science and have asked for help in prayer when they have challenges. One of the daughters was healed when injured playing basketball. She came down hard on her ankle and heard a cracking sound. She was in pain, and her father (our church member) was called. While she was taken to a hospital, the father called a church member for prayer, and that church member in turn called several others. When the ankle was examined at the hospital, it was not broken, and the daughter was quickly free of pain.

There has been so much healing going on here. The lectures the preparation, and the prayerful work you have done, Elise, has healed and blessed and continues to heal and bless us and our neighbors. Our attendance at church services and Reading Room continues to grow, as well. We are so grateful for the healing power of the Christ you imparted in your lectures.

With much love and gratitude,
FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST
